TOM'S LOVEBIRD FARM HOME OF THE OPALINE LOVEBIRDS HOW IMPORTANT IS GRITS FOR LOVEBIRDS? Grits are used to grind foods in the gizzard. This is very important for birds that swallow their foods whole like pegions, doves, finches and other softbills. Birds belonging to the hookbill family don't really need grits to break down their foods. Lovebirds and other hookbills already break down their foods when they opened up the seeds and make them smaller in their beaks. Therefore, the foods are already soft enough and lovebirds do not need grits to help them break down the foods. However, there are many breeders and lovebird pet owners do use grits. They seem to be doing just find. As well as for me, some of my breeders have grits and some do not. They are all doing ust find. I do not see any differences in the breeding habits of my lovebirds. There is a big debate between the 2 sides when it comes to using grits for lovebirds. You might just have to make up your mind on this. |
